Welcome to the Adopt a Fish, Adopt a School program for Abaco Island, Bahamas.

Our goal is to increase environmental awareness by directly integrating scientific research and educational opportunities.

Adopt A Fish • Abaco Island, Bahamas

Friends of the Environment (FRIENDS) is sponsoring a first-of-its kind partnership program entitled, “Adopt a Fish, Adopt a School”. In this program, FRIENDS is seeking people that would be interested in sponsoring the cost of fish transmitter “tags” ($400/tag, which includes shipping and set-up costs). The tag can then be “donated” to a local school, so that both donor and students will be able to claim a fish as their “own”.

Tagging fish with local children

Donors can chose their own school with which to share the tag, or FRIENDS can designate a school/class for the donor.

Field trips will be arranged whenever possible so that donors and students can participate in capturing their own fishes to be tagged. Currently, we are focusing tagging efforts on snapper and barracuda, although soon there should be additional opportunities to tag other species (e.g., bonefish). Information from the receiver array will be downloaded every two months and uploaded to this website. In this manner, donors and students will be able to frequently track the movements and location of their tagged individual.

This project is intended to integrate scientists, students, and interested community members to form a firm foundation to conserve and manage natural resources of Abaco and The Bahamas. So, as very unique donation to support conservation on Abaco, why not adopt a fish? In fact, adopt a whole school!

To adopt your fish, please contact either Friends of the Environment or Dr. Craig Layman directly.  In the United States gifts (such as the tags) to Friends of the Environment of $250 or more is tax deductible through PERC (Preservation, Environment, Restoration, Community), a 501©(3) organization.
